A uniquely Manchester Cinco de Mayo celebration and world's largest taco tour
We estimate more than 30,000 attended the 8th annual Hippo de Mayo in Downtown Manchester & the Millyard.
BIG NEWS! Elm Street will now be closed for the duration of the Taco Tour! Mayor Joyce Craig arranged this generous donation.
This year the world's largest taco tour got even larger with more than 30,000 estimated to have attended. We want to thank all 50 restaurants for participating and the sponsors that allows this event to happen.
Hippo de Mayo is New England's largest Cinco de Mayo celebration and it's held in downtown Manchester, NH, with 50 restaurants participating. Restaurants create their unique take on the taco and sell them to the public for $2 each.
The public traveled from restaurant to restaurant trying tacos over a five hour period (the event is open from 4 pm until 9 pm). Restaurants vie for people and judges' choice, creating traditional and non-traditional taco combinations, from Transylvanian dessert taco to a Korean Bulgogi taco to a Greek Opa taco made with marinated pork, tzatziki and french fries.
There are two winners: People's Choice and Judges' Choice. Each winning restaurants wins $1,000 for their charity of choice.
Who does this? Hippo staff thought up the event and Hippo continues to help with getting the word out, but it's really the restaurants that pull this off -- with their hard work and creative food. Why does Hippo help with this? It's good for Manchester and it's a way for Hippo to give back to a city that has supported it for 15 years. This event came together in 2011 as a way to encourage more people to visit our downtown. The first year it attracted 5,000 people and now it's one of the largest event held downtown.
This is a huge revenue — and necessary — generator for downtown restaurants. Support from the restaurant sponsors is greatly appreciated.
